Update: The police said that the woman pulled from the car was dead.

On Wednesday afternoon, a woman was rescued from a vehicle trapped in the rapids at the top of Niagara Falls. She is the only passenger in this car.

The Buffalo News reported that someone was pulled out of the car shortly after 2pm. The Coast Guard has arrived at the scene. An axe-equipped Coast Guard officer descended from the helicopter and rescued a person from the vehicle.

The police told reporters at the scene that there was only one woman in her 60s in the car. She didn't respond at the scene. She was described as a local, and the black Toyota Camry she drove was registered at an address in Williamsville.

According to Stephen T. Watson of Buffalo News, an ambulance was sent down to pick her up.

Police said that witnesses saw her enter the river between the vehicle and the pedestrian bridge on Goat Island. They are still investigating whether this was intentional.

According to Watson, the police used drones to look inside the car, identify people in the car and scan the license plate.

As of 2:40 pm on Wednesday, when the staff determined the safest way to retrieve it, the vehicle was still submerged.

This is after an update posted on the NiagaraAction Twitter account. A Niagara County Sheriff’s helicopter flew over the scene.

The news broke early Wednesday afternoon. The same account shared a video of a car submerged in rushing water about 100 yards from the edge of Niagara Falls.

The video showed that when water gushed from the car, the car with its trunk opened was partially submerged.

News 4 Abby Fridman of Buffalo confirmed that the car was in the rapids on the American side of the waterfall near Prospect Point.

Emergency rescuers arrived at the scene shortly before 1 pm and tried to pull the vehicle out of the water.

According to the Buffalo News, a state park police officer was seen putting on diving equipment.

"I thought I saw a person inside. It kept floating," Jeremy Smith told the Niagara Gazette. "I thought I saw someone. The people next to me thought they saw a woman in the back seat, and maybe a child."

According to the "Communiqué", the New York Power Authority reduced water flow to assist in rescue operations.

KISS FM DJ Nicholas Picholas posted more photos showing yellow police tape and onlookers. The police were also seen flying a drone over the vehicle.
